Xiaomi Beats Samsung To Take Top Spot In Global Smartphone Rankings
Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi for the first time, has surpassed both giants Apple & Samsung to become the number one smartphone brand on the globe in June. The company grabbed a 17.1% share of the total number of smartphones sold globally in June, with sales surging by 26%.
According to Counterpoint Research, the shares of Samsung and Apple smartphones sold globally were 15.7% and 14.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, Xiaomi was the second-largest smartphone maker by shipment after Samsung in the second quarter of 2021.
For June 2021, Xiaomi’s sales grew 26% month-on-month growth to overtake Samsung in June, making it the fastest-growing brand for the month. The global foldable market is estimated to triple from a year earlier to reach around 9 million units in 2021, and the world’s largest smartphone vendor -Samsung- is projected to represent 88%.
Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Samsung‘s production was disrupted last month, and the resulting lockdown in Vietnam supplies parts for the South Korean smartphone maker. Counterpoint Research expects Samsung to bounce back once its supply issues get resolved, which may see Xiaomi fall back to second again.
The report further adds that going forward, if the situation in Vietnam doesn’t change and improve, Samsung’s production is likely to remain hit, while Xiaomi is continuing to gain share from the Korean brand. Though, once Samsung recovers, we probably see an exciting battle between the two Android smartphone brands.
Xiaomi has been leading the smartphone market in India for a short period of time. The company had a remarkable June quarter this year that first saw it overtake Samsung in Europe. Now, it has surpassed the South Korean electronics giant globally in June. This is the first time when Xiaomi has managed to grab the top spot among smartphone makers. However, it still ranks behind Samsung in the second spot if the entire quarter is calculated.
