Samsung Adds Matter Support To SmartThings For A Better Home Experience

As you are probably aware, technological advancements touch every aspect of our lives and make them more manageable in some ways. Samsung just stated that it would support Matter’s integration with SmartThings, Galaxy devices, and the rest of its ecosystem. Matter provides platform-independent integration of smart homes. Apple and Google have both entered the fray.

The smart home Matter trend is gaining traction. With last week’s announcement of Google’s support for the new standard and Apple’s addition of Matter support at WWDC, Samsung has followed suit. At SDC21, Samsung’s virtual developer conference this week, the firm announced a total adoption of Matter throughout Samsung’s Galaxy devices, televisions, Family Hub appliances, and SmartThings hubs.

What Has Happened To Bring Us To This Point?

The issue is at the heart of Google’s Home speaker technology, and Amazon is incorporating it into its Echo smart speakers. Google and Apple are integrating Matter support for device control into Android and iOS, respectively.

Project Chip was the last name given to this situation. The goal was to reduce the amount of fragmentation in the smart home market. There are numerous smart home items on the market today that are exclusively compatible with specific systems, such as Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, or Apple’s HomeKit. With Project Chip – and consequently Matter – users will integrate any product into any ecosystem they choose to create. When it comes to Apple HomeKit-only products, they might be used in a Google-based smart home.

When the new standard is released and completely integrated into the SmartThings platform in 2022, it will affect several Samsung goods. SmartThings, a South Korean company, announced that matter-enabled gadgets would join a long list of other goods and brands already available in the ecosystem.

The Matter is a connection standard developed by more than 180 organizations that intends to become the de-facto standard in every home, providing consumers with compatibility across devices, flexibility, and more options when purchasing connected home products.

No Matter who makes it, consumers should buy any Matter-compliant smart home gadget and be confident that it will operate with their chosen smart home platform and voice assistant. The procedure of setting up and connecting each item should be the same, using the same software, so that screwing in a light bulb used to be as simple as it is now.

SmartThings Platform, Line Of Samsung Smart Devices

When we talk about SmartThings, we mean Samsung’s line of smart devices, the app that controls them, and the underlying technology that enables them to be linked together. Support for Matter should make connecting Samsung devices with others’ systems easier and “makes smart home connectivity practically effortless,” the firm claimed in a statement.

When SmartThings first appeared on Kickstarter in 2012, Samsung snapped it up the following year for $1 billion. With so many smart home gadgets on the market, each with its app and configuration, early adoption might be perplexing for many. That’s why the SmartThings concept sounded good to me. SmartThings connects all of your disparate devices with a single app and a central hub.

More than a dozen leading smart home technology companies have endorsed Matter. Devices that are Matter approved will have a logo with three round-tipped arrows pointing toward a central point, making them easily recognizable.

Due to the adoption of Matter by Samsung SmartThings, devices that previously could not connect to the SmartThings app or hub will be allowed to join the SmartThings ecosystem, and vice versa. With the SmartThings app, you can operate a HomeKit-only Eve LED light strip from your phone or tablet.

For example, operating a Nest thermostat with an Apple iPhone or an Amazon Echo smart speaker would be a cinch with Matter’s promise that gadgets supporting it would be readily integrated into homes controlled by tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Apple. Customers and device manufacturers are both concerned about today’s connectivity issues. Thus, Matter’s success may positively impact how quickly smart home technology is adopted in the future.

This means that Samsung has now joined Apple, Amazon, and Google in making a partial commitment to Matter. Users of smart homes will be able to buy any product with confidence once all of the major smart home players have signed on.

However, Samsung did not provide any details on which products will use the new software platform. As for the timeframe, it would merely say “Spring 2022.” The good news for your smart home is that purchasing decisions will become much easier soon.
After canceling the event in 2020 due to COVID-19, Samsung held its developer conference virtually for the first time in 2021. Like Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, this is Samsung’s chance to get developers enthused about programming for its devices. Before official product introductions, Samsung’s Developer Conference has served as a platform for exhibiting new technology. For example, Samsung’s foldable phone concepts were on display before the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip were unveiled in 2018.
