Integration of Creativity & Improvements

After weeks of hype and leaks, Microsoft finally announced Windows 11, the next version of its desktop operating system. This is a major change that it’s calling “the next generation of Windows.” While the company said that Windows 10 was the last version of Windows, ignoring major point launches for a regular cadence of bi-annual updates. A first look reveals that a lot of work went into the user interface and the user experience. Below, you will see the best features of the all-new Windows 11.

At the event, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made sure to tell everyone that this announcement was the first version & upgrade of a new era for operating systems. He claimed that developers have the opportunity to build their own platforms on Windows 11. He added:

“Windows is the scene for the world’s creation. With this new upgrade of Windows, we’re unleashing the innovation & ingenuity inherent in all of us. Today, the world needs a more open platform; The one that allows applications to become platforms in their own rights. Windows is the platform where things that are bigger than Windows can be born, like the web. That’s our aspiration with Windows 11.”

After 1.3 billion active installations of Windows 10, this is the first major update to the Windows platform since Windows 10 launched back in 2015. Not only it’s representative of a significant shift in how Microsoft delivers Windows, but also it’s a significant UX overhaul as well. If you are currently a Windows 10 user, Windows 11 will be available as a free upgrade at the arrival of this holiday season (around late November), so long as your computer is compatible.

A New Look And Improved UI

One of the biggest changes users notice is that the iconic Start menu has been moved to the center of the screen, and it’s cloud-powered. Now, it displays not just apps but also recently accessed files. Additionally, the taskbar is now centered. And it pops up and goes full menu when you move the cursor across it. Also, Light Mode and Dark Mode are available, with rounded corners and a unified design across the operating system. A big focus here is making Windows better for touch, something that Windows 10 has struggled with.

Gaming Improvements On Windows 11

First, Windows 11 will support DirectX 12 Ultimate, which can allow for boosted visuals and frame rates. Second, you can run Xbox Game Pass games, and Xbox Cloud Gaming will be supported in the Xbox app on Windows 11. Third, you have DirectStorage and Auto HDR. This marks another move toward integrating PCs & Xbox consoles for Microsoft. In addition, the company declares that thanks to a new storage API in Windows 11, games will be able to load game assets without bogging down the CPU quickly. These features enable you to play your games even faster than before.

New Microsoft Store

Microsoft has the policy to help developers bring more of their applications to the store. The new store is a redesign with better-curated content and better options for managing your purchased programs and shows and mirroring them to your television. Apps such as  Zoom, Disney+, TikTok, Adobe Creative Cloud, Visual Studio, and Pinterest. For Microsoft, it doesn’t matter what kind of app you made. It can be Win32, .NET, UWP, Xamarin, Election, React Native, Java, a PWA, or something else, and Microsoft wants it in the store.

Android Apps Integration

One surprise feature here is that Windows 11 will allow you to run Android apps on your PC. In other words, you’re no longer restricted to the Windows Store. And installable from within the new Microsoft Store via the Amazon Appstore. You can now download choice apps from various sources: Google Play Store, Amazon App Store, etc. This is something Windows users have been waiting for it for years, and it marks another move toward gaming mobile and laptop devices.

Microsoft Teams Integration

Instead of offering it as a separate app, Microsoft Teams is built directly into the Taskbar in Windows 11 for easier video calling. This videoconferencing and messaging tool has almost 145 million users. Recently, the developer launched the consumer version of Teams, so that it makes sense to now bring it to Windows 11. Maybe that’s why Microsoft never brought Skype to Windows!

As we know, Teams is cross-platform software; you’re able to access teams from Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS. Now by adding this feature to Windows 11, you’ll find Teams chat right in the taskbar, so you can easily talk to friends. Your contacts will also move with you, whether you’re on Windows, Android, or iOS. Furthermore, you can message those who don’t even own the Teams app, as it will instead connect with them via two-way SMS.

Touch Improvements + Tablet Mode

Microsoft aims to make Windows 11 easier to use on tablets than Windows 10.  Microsoft points to improve the experience for touch, with more space between icons on the taskbar and adding gestures. These gestures are used with the trackpad of the Surface models are coming to the touch screen and bringing in some familiarity here.

Windows 11 also adds haptics to your digital pen, so you can hear and feel vibrations as you use it for taking notes or drawing. A new digital pen will provide haptic and audio feedback, and voice typing keeps getting better. Haptics uses a pen for better feedback when drawing or sketching.

You will see an effect under your window for easier touching when you touch it with your finger. Microsoft added gestures for opening and closing windows, switching between desktops, and new options in the Windows Ink Workspace. Microsoft said that the touch gestures would be the same as when you’re using a precision touchpad. Although Windows 10 has tablet mode that makes your PC go to a full-screen Start Menu experience, In Windows 11, this is removed.

When you switch your device to a tablet, the tablet mode will be more close to the desktop mode than Windows 10, with minor changes such as more space amongst taskbar icons. By Windows 11, when you plug your laptop into a monitor, it will remain the last software layout you were using.

Tablet mode has been one of the weak points of Windows ever since Windows 8. The new tablet mode features that Microsoft showed off for Windows 11 can be the key to the OS’s chances. Specifically, with future Surface products in the pipeline from Microsoft, a new, numbered operating system for its next tablets could be a big selling point for new users.

The company revealed touch targets at the Microsoft event and better rotate optimizations like how windows are rearranged. So you do lose track of the applications you were using. The touch keyboard is redesigned, with a smaller keyboard just for your thumb, and emojis are ready to be used. Microsoft says punctuation will also be improved, besides voice commands, with “delete that” options and more.

Improved Multitasking Features

Previously, Microsoft offered some multitasking features on Windows 10, but you will face new changes this time. Collections of the apps you’re using at the same time in the taskbar and can come up or be minimized at once for easier task switching. This is a Windows 11 exclusive feature, and you won’t be seeing it in Windows 10. Windows 11 includes features called Snap Groups and Snap Layouts.

Snap Layouts will offer you more customization of how you want multiple apps displayed on your screen simultaneously. It enables you to arrange multiple windows across the screen, not just side by side, but in columns, sections, and more. These let you choose from options of window layouts, easily populating them with app windows of your choice. Also, you can plug and unplug from a monitor more quickly, without losing where your open windows are located.

Windows 11 allows you to create multiple desktops which each of them can be customized for a different use case, such as having one for work and another for gaming. This could be useful and great for organization, plus helping you separate your work from your downtime. These options come with the latest windowing convenience.

Last but not least, there are improvements across the board in Windows 11. Microsoft promises that Windows 11 will be 40% smaller, more efficient, and occur in the background, plus touting Windows 11 as the most secure release yet. Windows 11 could be a great upgrade by its speed improvements besides UI enhancements. As a matter of fact, Microsoft committed to supporting Windows 10 through 2025. Notably, It was confirmed that Windows 11 would get once-a-year updates. In conclusion, It looks like Microsoft will be integrating the Windows 10X features into Windows 11.
